Top 10 Heavyweights

I decided to only pick ones who had been world champions.

10. Rocky Marciano

Marciano was known for his tactics of hitting opponents on the arms to force them to drop their guard. The only heavyweight to retire unbeaten but his record is marred by many, many accusations of Mafia involvement helping him to his wins. It is hard to be sure if he really was as good as his record suggests because of those rumblings.

9. Floyd Patterson

Was the youngest when he won the title and is still one of the best. The problem is that he has been bettered by later boxers.

8. Max Schmeling

I have to be honest, I have picked him because I have a soft spot for a guy that goes out of his way to help those who have fallen on hard times. This was a guy the Nazi regime tried to build up as the Aryan ideal but he refused to dispense with his Jewish trainer and hid two Jewish children in his home to help them escape Nazi persecution. Later, after the war, he became immensely wealthy by buying the Coca-Cola bottling rights in Germany and used his money to help out his great rival, Joe Louis, when he fell on hard times. He also helped pay for Louis's funeral after he died.

7. Joe Frasier

He was unlucky to be around at the time he was, in almost any other era he would have been head and shoulders above the competition. It was probably the golden age for heavyweight boxers, when there was genuine quality throughout the division.

6. George Foreman

His style may have been likened to the Mummy, but Foreman was one of the best boxers of all time at smothering opponents and not allowing them any time and space. His brute strength was enough to allow him to remain an effective boxer until well after he should have retired.

5. Lennox Lewis

Technically he was one of the best I ever saw, but he lacked any genuine class opponents to prove himself against. He was too late to the party to meet the Tysons and Holyfields at their peaks. Shame because he had the potential to be as good as anyone, but we will never know just how good he actually was.

4. Mike Tyson

For a short period he could probably have steamrollered any fighter, with a much higher skill level than he is given credit for. The loss of his guiding influence Cus D'Amato so early in his career allowed him to run riot, instead of concentrating on his training. Such a waste that talent like his was only able to be harnessed for a short period.

3. Muhammad Ali/Cassius Clay

While he called himself 'The Greatest' and there is a very reasonable argument to say he is so, for me it is hard to give him the credit for being so when he admitted himself that he copied his style from Jack Johnson in large part. Also he was robbed of a large portion of his peak years through no fault of his own. Though he was not the only one to have suffered due to war.

2. Joe Louis

My granddad's favourite boxer (he would often tell me about meeting him during the war) so I got to watch a lot of the Brown Bomber, including his fights with Schmeling. He was an incredible boxer but another to suffer through losing his peak years to a war.

1. Jack Johnson

He was so good that he broke down the boundaries between colour in boxing. Prior to him black boxers were dismissed as being nowhere good enough to compete with white fighters. Johnson was just too good to be dismissed. He brought riding punches into professional boxing and was the first black heavyweight champion of the world. And he always maintained that his defeat was because he was forced to throw the fight.

Can't say I'd disagree with that list, although I personally would rank Tyson lower down the list, imo.

2.) 05 Jul 2019 20:30:32
I'd take Schmeling and Paterson off that list and put Jack Dempsey and Sonny Liston in there.

3.) 05 Jul 2019 21:34:33
Good write up that ed, cheers.

Did u know that Jack Johnson give tactical advice to max schmeling before his first fight with Louis? Apparently Johnson wanted to fight Louis seeing flaws in his defence and that he was especially open to an overhand right, and when Louis refused to fight him, Johnson travelled to the schmeling camp and told them what he knew.

{Ed001's Note - yeah though it is usually claimed Schmeling spotted the way Louis tended to drop his right when he threw lefts.}

4.) 05 Jul 2019 23:21:22
Sounds about right ed mate, schmeling did like to study videos of his opponents.

{Ed001's Note - as all boxers should, but still many don't.}

5.) 06 Jul 2019 20:58:01
I think that's a confidence thing ed. Most fighters constantly need reassuring that they r great and stupidity don't do the necessary preparation.

On the list, Larry Holmes deserves a spot imo.

{Ed001's Note - I actually thought I had Liston in there, I think he deserves a speck, not so sure about Holmes, he was there to pick off past-their-prime fighters really, so it is difficult to judge him.}

6.) 06 Jul 2019 22:46:35
I was also thinking about modern day heavyweights. It's a shame that none of them were/ are good enough to make the list, both Klitscko bros would be top 20 for me. What u think mate?

7.) 07 Jul 2019 00:58:46
At his peak, I would have to say the number one heavyweight of all time would be Mike Tyson, purely for his ferocious punching power, he would have knocked both Fury and AJ spark out, sadly drugs finished him off.

8.) 07 Jul 2019 11:54:14
Peak Foreman v Peak Tyson? I know who I'd back.

Anyway, peak Tyson is ATG for sure, but over the course of his great career top 10 yes, but beyond that not so sure.

Thanks for posting Ed001, it's a great topic to explore.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome mate, I am enjoying reading the opinions.}

9.) 07 Jul 2019 12:19:06
Foreman with his stiff style would have been perfect for Tyson to soften him up, and take him out with ferocious uppercuts up through his guard, he would have knocked anyone out at his peak, it was sad to see the way he ended up trying to fight, addicted to drugs.

10.) 07 Jul 2019 12:21:12
I think your top ten middleweights is going to be a blockbuster ed, what a choice of legends you have in that division mate.

{Ed001's Note - that will be a tough choice.}

11.) 07 Jul 2019 12:53:40
Top 4 easy enough to pick I think ed, it's the next 6 that might give you the problem deciding, Hagler, Leonard, Duran, Hearns?

{Ed001's Note - Sugar Ray Robinson?}

12.) 07 Jul 2019 13:02:16
That's what I mean ed, it's such a difficult choice lol, best of luck with it mate lol.

{Ed001's Note - I just hope I don't leave people out this time! I always forget someone.}

13.) 07 Jul 2019 14:13:15
Ray Robinson is the all time lb for lb number one.

14.) 07 Jul 2019 20:32:27
Monzon has to be at number 2.

15.) 08 Jul 2019 18:30:50
Canelo and GGG have to in it for me. I don't know if duran should be in the middleweight top 10, he was prob the best light weight of all time not middleweight. Leonard aswell more of a welterweight.

16.) 08 Jul 2019 20:55:04
The problem with Mike tyson championship rounds was not drugs mate it was that tyson is an emotional wreck with serious mental issues.

17.) 08 Jul 2019 21:43:49
Think manny pacquiao won a middleweight title.

18.) 09 Jul 2019 01:36:07
Roro, Duran and Leonard fought in some great fights at middleweight, we know that they also fought at other weights, and it was drugs that finished Tyson, he had mental health problems since he was a kid, but it didn't stop him from becoming world champion.

19.) 09 Jul 2019 07:45:58
I don't believe you missed out the Manassa Mauler Jack Dempsey. I remember in the 60's my granddad used to call my older brother Jack, mauler after him. He used to say Dempsey was the greatest and he put boxing on the map. It must be hard to pick 10 Ed but no Jack Dempsey my granddad would be turning in his grave.

{Ed001's Note - I have never seen him fight so couldn't include him.}

20.) 09 Jul 2019 09:12:53
Fair enough Ed, I am just giving him a shout out for my grandparents who probably only seen him in the cinema newsreels. He was a small man and in his era the greatest.

{Ed001's Note - I did think about including him but I just thought I should stick to ones I have seen footage of.}

21.) 09 Jul 2019 11:35:28
Championship rounds, if u r going to include duran then include him when he was at his best which was lightweight. That's like saying I'm including Roy Jones jnr at heavyweight.

It wasn't drugs that made tyson not train for the Douglas fight, it wasnt drugs that made tyson go to jail. It wasn't drugs that made tyson split from kevin rooney and teddy atlas. Tyson was a great fighter for about 3 years but sadly he didn't have it between the ears to fullfill his true potential.

22.) 09 Jul 2019 12:59:18
Ed001 there is lots of footage of Jack Dempsey online. In fact a lot more than there is of Jack Johnson or Max Schmeling.

If you had left him out of your to 10 because you didn't think he deserved it fair enough.

But to say you couldn't include him because you've never seen him fight, massively weakens the credibility of your top ten.

{Ed001's Note - weakens the credibility? Wtf? It is a personal top 10. What a bizarre statement. I don't care if there is a billion hours of Dempsey online, I have never seen any of it and I don't have time to sit and look at it either nor the inclination if I did. I really think you are taking this far too seriously.}

23.) 09 Jul 2019 13:34:57
I lost respect for Dempsey when I heard he refused to fight jack johnson because he was a black man. Prob a lot more to it though, I just remember reading it afew years ago.

24.) 09 Jul 2019 17:19:55
Wow what an over reaction Ed001.

I guess you're entitled to be a bit embarrassed for leaving two all time greats from your top ten!

{Ed001's Note - me over reacting? Have you tried looking in the mirror lately? It is an off the head list and you are taking it all way too seriously like it actually matters.}

25.) 09 Jul 2019 17:26:08
I've read some really complimentary stuff that Dempsey is supposed to have said about Johnson back in the day Roro.

I also read somewhere that they fought in secret but I find it hard to believe. I think politics may have been the reason they didn't fight.

26.) 09 Jul 2019 17:45:36
Ha ha I'm embarrassed for you Ed001.

Everyone on this site knows you're a hothead!

{Ed001's Note - whatever. You should be embarrassed for yourself, you are getting all carried away about nothing, but if it makes you happy to seem like a big man on the net, you just keep on going sunshine. Bless ya, I am sure you actually think it matters.}

27.) 09 Jul 2019 21:01:46
Roro we are talking about the great fights Duran had against the top guys at middleweight, it's about the middleweight division, you are missing the point, and Tyson never trained because he was out partying on drink and drugs, also Tyson had plenty between his ears, he was a boxing historian who spent hours studying old fights and honing his technique.

28.) 09 Jul 2019 21:05:04
I'm just thinking, here's another list for you ed when you've done all the weights, top ten greatest boxing venues.

29.) 09 Jul 2019 22:43:07
Well Duran wouldn’t be in my middleweight top 10, I’d prefer to have fighters who were at their best in that division like Harry Greb, LaMotta and Hopkins.

30.) 10 Jul 2019 02:35:48
Fury top 5, 12 months fron now you'll see why.

31.) 10 Jul 2019 18:46:10
He might even end up higher lerchy.

32.) 10 Jul 2019 18:47:25
Hopkins had most of his fights at heavier weights.

33.) 10 Jul 2019 21:40:06
Your not getting my point championsship rounds mate. Yes Hopkins boxed at heavier weights but he was at his best at middleweight.

34.) 10 Jul 2019 22:14:15
I think Hopkins fought around 40 times at middleweight, more than 20 of those fights were for world titles. He did start and end his career at LHW though. Without doubt one of the all time great middleweights imo.

35.) 11 Jul 2019 06:37:41
There have been some great Middleweights I am not saying these guys get in the top 10 but one of my favourite fights was the boxer Michael second to nunn vJames lights out Toney. Toney completely out boxed for eight rounds then slowly breaking Nunn down and knocking him out in the 11th. A great fight.

36.) 11 Jul 2019 09:10:43
That was a great fight. Not taking anything away from toney, but nunn was struggling with the weight by that stage, and moved up straight after that. His only loss at middleweight I think.

37.) 11 Jul 2019 13:46:49
I agree, Nunn was dead at the weight.
He was without doubt one of the slickest southpaw middleweights.
Toney could bang though.

38.) 11 Jul 2019 14:20:28
Toney was a huge puncher. Carried that power up to heavyweight.

I still think Nunn was a very special talent. He was released from prison a few months ago. Hopefully there's a job for him in boxing. He must be about 50 now.

39.) 13 Jul 2019 13:30:12
Have to disagree there roro mate.

I have had to put it on hold as all my stuff was sent ahead of me before my visa was cancelled, but I will be getting back to it next month.

He was on drugs, that much is known, just not whether they were performance-enhancing or not is the question. He certainly stopped taking cocaine for the fight which could have made the same difference.}

Hahaha I hope you are right, but as I am already part Irish enough to qualify for an Irish passport (which I was hoping to sort out while I am here) I am not sure the luck of the Irish has been helping me all that much!
